Who We Are

Since 1977, the Cadence Cloggers have been entertaining various groups in and around San Antonio , all over Texas, America and, indeed, the world.

Some videos of us in action:

  • Orange Blossom Special
  • Texas on a Saturday Night

  • That Man
  • Arkansas Traveler

We have performed at or in:

  • The New Orleans World Fair
  • The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon
  • The film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
  • The Lifetime's Attitudes Show
  • Numerous shows at Fiesta Texas
  • Numerous events at Sea World of Texas
  • Kumamoto, Japan
  • Dendermonde, Belgium

Cadence was formed in 1977 by Nancy Biehler. While not the first organized group in Texas, Cadence was the first in several categories. The Texas Cloggers' Rally was first held in 1980 by Cadence in Kosciusko (talk about a speck on the map!) and, when we saw the need to make it statewide, we joined with clogging leaders to form the Texas Clogging Council.

Former Cadence President, Peg Hadley, felt that clogging should be "shown off" more to the general public. She felt there was no better venue than the Arneson River Theater in San Antonio. In 1989, the first San Antonio Cloggers' Showcase took place. Like the Rally before it, Showcase became its own entity after a couple of years.

We have a reputation for being a high-energy, quick-stepping, precisely-choreographed dance group. We perform routines to a wide range of music, in a variety of colorful costumes. Locally we perform at events such as the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo , the Medina Apple Festival, the Poteet Strawberry Festival , Night in Old San Antonio (NIOSA) , New Braunfels' Wurstfest , and the Texas Folklife Festival . We have entertained at Sea World of Texas and Fiesta Texas .

We were selected to perform in San Antonio's Showcase of Dance in 1997 and 1998. And, we were honored to have been part of the opening ceremonies of the Fiesta Centennial celebration, the HemisFair 25th Anniversary festivities, the opening events of the Alamodome , and the opening ceremonies at the US Olympic Festival '93.

In July 1996, we were one of two clogging groups to perform for the opening of the National Square Dance Convention held in the Alamodome.

We also enjoy providing entertainment for private parties, festivals, conventions, and school/church fund-raising events in and around the San Antonio area. Not long ago, the Cadence Cloggers were selected as one of three performing groups to represent San Antonio at the Hinokuni Festa Carnival in our sister city of Kumamoto, Japan. In May of each year, we host the Annual Cloggers' Showcase at the Arneson River Theater in the beautiful La Villita area of downtown San Antonio. Over 400 cloggers from around Texas and Oklahoma join us for two nights of continuous clogging performances.

In August 1996, 21 of the Cadence Cloggers traveled to Belgium to perform as guests of the VVKB Reynout, the top Flemish Folk Dance Group. We were the first American Clogging group to perform in the Flanders region of Belgium. In August 1999, Reynout visited San Antonio to perform at the Texas Folklife Festival , San Antonio College , and Sea World of Texas. In August 2003, we returned to Belgium at the invitation of VVKB Reynout, to perform with five other international groups at three major folk festivals.

Most Recently, in June 2005, we traveled to Portland, Oregon where we were honored to participate in the 55th National Square Dance Invitational Program at the 54th National Square Dance Convention. We performed six additional exhibitions for folks all over the globe while we were there. In Salem, Oregon we were invited to kick up our heels at this year's Salem World Beat Festival. What an wonderful and exciting opportunity to experience a variety of cultures from around the world!

Education about and preservation of the American heritage that is clogging has always been our goal. In an effort to continue that cause, Cadence Cloggers filed with the IRS as a non-profit organization under Section 501c(3) of the IRS code. Donations to the group are eligible deductions for those who itemize. If you'd like to sponsor some part of our effort with a donation, please contact us.
